Seoul Guest House
|
|
In millennial Seoul, this is an extraordinary discovery: a renovated traditional house sitting in Seoul’s last, labyrinthine neighbourhood of old architecture. It’s tough to locate (call ahead and the friendly, English-speaking owner Ms Lee will pick you up from Anguk subway station), but once found, it’s an oasis. Bathing and kitchen facilities are communal and you sleep, as per tradition, on the deck (heated in winter). There’s a nod to modernity in the form of free internet access. Guests can be an interesting crew: academics, journalists and NGO types often stay here. In the evening, with the walls insulating you from the bustle of the city and the red and blue paper lanterns switched on in the courtyard, you’re transported back to the Seoul of yesteryear. |
