Excursions
Gray Line: Daily two-hour coach tours ($29) pass major sights. More fun is Gray Line's daily hop-on, hop-off tour ($31.78) aboard a red double decker bus in summer, or tram in winter. Tel: 416 594 3310 or visit www.grayline.ca.
The amazing Niagara Falls is a 90-minute drive west of the city. Daredevils can walk behind the curtain of water crashing down at the rate of 800,000 tonnes per second. For the less wild at heart, the Niagara's own steamboat, Maid of the Mist, ferries passengers to the base of American Falls and then on to the Horseshoe Falls basin. It runs May-October, with daily departures every 15 minutes, and admission is $10.65 per person. Tel: 905 358 5781.
For the best view of the Falls, book a table for dinner in the revolving restaurant atop the 236 m Skylon Tower. The Falls are illuminated year-round by a nightly light show, with fireworks on Friday nights in the summer and on statutory holidays.
The region surrounding Niagara is home to Ontario's internationally acclaimed wineries, so rent a car and make a day of it. Visit www.winesofontario.org for details. Wine and food connoisseurs should also check out www.savourontario.cafor delicious day-trip ideas.
