Shopping

Save for Union Square, San Francisco shopping is a neighbourhood affair, with shops clustered along key streets in Pacific Heights, North Beach and the Marina, to name a few. At the Square, the best boutiques fan out along Geary, Post and Sutter Streets with fashionistas flocking to Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci and Chanel. They can also be found at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, multi-storey temples of haute couture and other excess. The new Williams-Sonoma flagship on Post is a four-story ode to cooking and gastronomy, packed with shiny cookware and tempting edibles. Jeweller Tiffany and Co. competes with its own shiny lovely things right next door. A few blocks south is San Francisco Centre, a full-on shopping mall at the downtown nexus of Powell and Market Streets and anchored by the classic yet elegant Nordstrom department store. While Nordstrom outfits men, women and children, those in the know are here for the shoes. Upper Grant Avenue between Vallejo and Union in North Beach is a two- block stretch of avant-garde attire for men and women – think stretchy and black. Both Fillmore Street and Sacramento Street in Pacific Heights cater to the young and upwardly mobile, although their moms can be seen shopping here as well. Margaret O'Leary(2400 Fillmore) is fashionable yet safe while Dottie Doolittle (3680 Sacramento) is heavenly for boys and girls. Chestnut Street in the Marina District covers form, function and comfort in places such as housewares haven Pottery Barn (2100 Chestnut), clothier Gap (2169 Chestnut) and hair care shop Aveda (2230 Chestnut). Cutting-edge and great fun are the shops and galleries of Hayes Valley, set along a three-block stretch of Hayes Street between Franklin and Laguna. Flight 001(525 Hayes) runs the gamut from luggage to handbags, whereas Zeni (567 Hayes) and Velvet DaVinci (508 Hayes) clothe and bejewel both men and women.
