Captured in 1760 from the French by the British, Montreal was an important base for exploring Westward and for fur trading.
There was a lot of anti-British feeling, which culminated in the Patriots' Rebellion in 1837, though the British managed to maintain control.
Montreal was Canada's capital city from 1844 for five years.
