The Galleria offers fine goods (Tiffany's, Church shoes, Saks Fifth Avenue) and between Neiman Marcus at the east end of this massive mall, and Macy'sto the west, a rich variety of stores, restaurants, and an ice rink provide quality people watching. Westheimer Rd. and Post Oak Boulevard just off Loop 610. Nearby Uptown Park is a small, somewhat overanxious ritzy outdoor shopping centre.

In southwest Houston, just off US Hwy 59, a dingy industrial street called Harwin is Houston's souk. Enterprising merchants selling from warehouses, trucks, and car trunks offer discounts on designer goods and knock-offs, bringing so many shoppers that traffic crawls.

Rice Village, named for the nearby university, is a pedestrian friendly oasis in this car town. Shopping and friendly restaurants cover a square mile (Rice University Blvd. at Kirby Drive).
