Houston is public transportation deprived. Going to and from downtown lodging to downtown or Medical Centre business is easy enough on Metro bus or light rail. Fare is $1. (Metro operates a free trolley in downtown and the downtown tunnel system makes walking easy in all weather.) Metro buses serve all other areas of the city, but not at all hours. If you are based in a suburb such as Katy or The Woodlands, ask your local hosts about Park and Ride options. Though Houston has the third largest cab fleet in the states most of these are going to and from airports; you can't reliably hail a taxi in this town. Rental cars are often $30 a day or less and hiring a car and driver can be quite reasonable – especially in terms of time – if you need to travel between districts.
