Denver has an artistically eclectic family of stars. Tim Allen, the actor, is originally from the city, as was fellow actor Douglas Fairbanks, who also started United Artists. Paul Whiteman, a famous jazz composer,
was influential on the sound and commissioned a certain George Gershwin to write a composition entitled Rhapsody In Blue. Scientist and influential researcher Florence Sabin, while born in Central City, came to Denver in 1948, where she managed health and charities in the city, but donated her salary to further medical research.
