The MBTA or T, as it is known, is the oldest subway system in America and still the fastest and most popular way to get around Boston. A $1.25 token gets you anywhere in the city on the colour-coded red, orange, blue or green lines. The red line goes to Cambridge and the green line takes you to Brookline. Buses cost 90 cents for most routes.
While the T begins running at 5.30 am and stops at 12.30 am, 'Night Owl' bus services operate on Fridays and Saturdays until 2.30 am. Nine bus routes, known as 'Rail Bus' routes run parallel to subway lines. Visitor passes are an economical way to use the T and are sold in daily to weekly increments. A one-day pass costs $7.50 and a 7-day pass is $35. For more information about fares and routes, visit www.mbta.com.
Taxi cabs can be hard to find and expensive. Taxi stands abound near tourist attractions and most hotels.
