For those who want to explore the country, hire cars are simple to rent and it does not cost a fortune. From about £20 per day you can hire a car and witness some of the more stunning sights at first hand. Residents of Britain can use their British licence while others can make use of an international licence. Seat belts are mandatory. Insurance is required against accidents, which can be arranged through local insurance companies, travel agent or car hire firm.
A quick tip—if you choose to drive in Oman don’t do so aggressively. You will despair at some of the examples of driving that you will witness but don’t let it get to you...keep your distance. Also be aware that there is a zero-tolerance policy when driving under the influence of alcohol, which carries harsh penalties.
Taxis are still the preferred mode of transport thanks to their low cost and ready availability. It costs less than £1.50 to travel between Ruwi and Muttrah—the two ends of the main city centre. Elsewhere, the fare will be higher no higher than £4.50. They can be phoned at any time of day or night.
If a driver hoots at you while you are walking down the street, it is not offensive but inquisitive. Call Hello Taxis on Tel: 607 011 or New Taxi Service on Tel: 501 020. Buses around the city, run by the Oman National Transport Company (ONTC) are also readily available for just a few hundred basias. The correct fare must be paid to the driver upon boarding the bus, but be aware that the city services can get very busy.
The same company also provides air-conditioned coach services to the country’s other major cities.
