Do not be put off by local sensibilities but show sensitivity to the local culture at all times. Oman might be a little more laid-back than many of its Arab partners but it is still a country that lives by the principles of Islam and as such it is only polite to observe certain codes of conduct. The rule of thumb is to respect the rules of the country in which you are a guest.
- Extremely revealing clothing is considered offensive—dress appropriately.
- Do not indulge in public consumption of food and drink daylight hours throughout the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Public displays of affection are not permitted.
- It is offensive to take photographs of Muslim women or near military installations.
- Omani women are usually very open but are deeply Muslim so should be treated with respect.
- If invited into an Omani household it is customary to remove your shoes at the front door.
- Omanis greet one another profusely upon meeting and it’s polite to return the gesture with a friendly word or handshake.
- A firm handshake is seen as a sign of aggression so clasp the hand lightly and place one hand on your heart.
- Men and women do not shake hands unless offered first.
- It is considered impolite to ask the origin or birthplace of an Omani.
- Do not consume alcohol in a public place.
- Do not break the laws as sentences are harsh
