Insider Info

Dr Khalid Al Awadhi is the chairman and CEO of Gulf Corporation for Technology/Gulf Pharmacy in Bahrain.

Where do you live and why?

Sehla, away from the hustle and bustle of Manama. Instead of being crowded, it’s relaxing, calm and quiet, but still right in the city.

What advice would you give a tourist? Any must-dos?

Do visit the various archeological sites—the historical burial mounds of A’ali, the various other sites tracing the more than 5,000 years of civilization on the island, the forts and other monuments, the old homesteads and tombs that trace the visits of various foreigners including the Portugese, British and Indians. Also don’t miss the Tree of Life, the National Museum and the Bait Al Quran. The history of Islamic culture in Bahrain is very interesting. For something more modern, visit the Saudi causeway, a real feat of engineering, and also look at the various new projects coming up. Dama (a mind sport) and water sports are other attractions.

What advice would you give a visiting business person?

Talk to the natives—communicate and discuss—and study something of Bahrain before you come, such as the meaning of Bahrain, Manama, Muharraq and the red and white flag.

It would be great if you could get a Bahraini family to invite you for lunch. It’s an opportunity to learn about our customs, family life and food. You really have to dine at a Bahraini home to taste authentic Bahraini cuisine.

What and where have you had your most memorable meals?

There are so many nice places in Bahrain! Nirvana and Fish Market are just two of them.

Where would you take a client to wow them?

The National Museum, the Causeway, the Tree of Life, and I’d give them a glimpse of modern Bahrain, including the upcoming Financial Harbour.

What do you miss about Bahrain when your’re away?

The easy atmosphere, the warmth and friendliness of the people, and the food.
