Bahrain is a very liberal country by Middle Eastern standards. However, of late there have been some resentment among more traditional circles about the way modern women dress. Always avoid discussing religion and Bahraini politics while you are in the country. Learn to say salaam when you enter a room with people, a taxi or an elevator, even if you find others are occupied with their own business. You will find the response surprising! Do not forget to say shukhran (the equivalent of ‘thank you’) whenever appropriate.
