Richard Woffenden is the culture editor at the weekly Cairo magazine. He has lived in the city for more than 15 years.Where do you live and why?
I’ve lived in Mohandiseen for some time now because it’s centrally located and there’s plenty to do here, but it’s still very friendly and relatively quiet. It has a modern Egyptian atmosphere.
What advice would you give a tourist? Any must do’s?
Don’t fret over money—haggling isn’t worth wasting your time over. Because all prices in Cairo are negotiable, many visitors obsess over getting ripped off. Just relax and think of bargaining as a game —which it is.
What advice would you give a visiting business person?
Always arrange meetings somewhere you won’t mind biding your time. As Cairo traffic and cultural differences make punctuality a rarity, be sure to rendezvous at a comfortable restaurant or pleasant café. And, likewise, don’t go anywhere without a newspaper or book.
Where would you take a client to wow them?
Probably Windows on the World, the revolving restaurant on top of the Ramses Hilton. The views are spectacular and the food is much better than at the Grand Hyatt’s revolving dining room.
What do you miss about Cairo when you’re away?
As bizarre as it may sound, I miss Stella beer.
