Shopping

Dubai might be stealing all the headlines when it comes to shopping but that is not to say that Abu Dhabi is any slouch when it comes to those in need of a little retail therapy. From traditional souks to state of the art malls the city is a shoppers paradise and offers a more tranquil setting to part with some dirhams than you’ll find up the road. There are is no duty or taxes on items here so there are bargains galore to be had for those that wish to invest a little time into planning your shopping trip. Sounds a bit military admittedly but prices do vary around town due to the fact that it is assumed that you’ll bargain with the vendor for every item that takes your fancy. Do not be put off – this is part of the culture here and expected wherever you go – the rule of thumb to remember is that if its not worth their while they won’t sell it despite the bleeding hearts.

For those in need of a mall trawl there are several excellent venues to choose from. Offering the latest in high street brands and also a buzzing atmosphere of an evening malls are big business in the UAE and considered a central meeting point. Try the Abu Dhabi Mall near the Beach Rotana Hotel in Al Meena (645 4858), the Marina Mall on the Breakwater (681 8300), which is spaciously laid out under an impressive Arabic-design tended roof and features several quality reataurants or the Hamdan Centre near the Novotel for a huge selection of cut-price goods. A little further out of town is the Madinat Zayed Shopping & Gold Center (631 8555), one of the largest in the Middle East, with everything the heart desires. As for the traditional feel of the Arabian souks or markets head to the Iranian Souk near Al Meena Carpet Market, Al Meena, where you will find an array of knicks, knacks and bargains.

Gifts to buy

Traditionally gold, jewels and precious stones have been good value in this part of the world and that is still the case today. You’ll find a good deal for whatever you are after but it is imperative that you have a bit of a shop around rather than just investing in the first jewellery store you find. Electronics can be another good choice, while spices are cheap, plentiful and make for an interesting gift. Traditionally carpets, coffee pots, hubbly-bubblies and sand paintings are some of the symbols of the region but can prove a bit of a headache getting into your luggage. If however you fancy a bit of kitsch you can’t go wrong with the souks for some serious souvenir searching. Moody designer watches, Abibas tops, stuffed camels and the inimitable mosque alarm clock are just a few of the delights on offer.

The Abu Dhabi Shopping Festival The Abu Dhabi Shopping Festival is held every year in March.
