Tipping etiquette
The Dutch are notoriously tight-fisted and rarely tip unless service is exceptional. Anything left by diners in restaurants is gratefully received, though, and visitors are still expected to give generously to underpaid hotel porters.

Internet cafes
Logging on at Easyinternetcafe (Stadhuisplein 16-18), around the corner from the main tourist office costs between 1 and 2 Euros per hour. It’s open from 11am-8pm on Monday, 9.30am-8pm from Tuesday to Thursday and Saturday, 9.30-9pm on Friday, and noon-8pm on Sunday.

Gifts to buy
For modern Dutch-designed furniture and a dazzling selection of retro pieces, it’s worth the cab ride to Design Dock (Van Helmontstraat 17-23, tel: 477 0200, www.designdockrotterdam.com). The Tourist Office (Coolsingel 67, tel: 0900 403 4065, www.rotterdam.nl) sells a more traditional and predictable selection of products. For Dutch food stuffs like liquorice, Genever (Dutch gin) and cheese, head for Albert Heijn (Leinbaan, tel: 413 7133, www.albertheijn.nl)
