Getting Around

RIGA AIRPORT
Riga’s only airport is approximately 8 kms from the city centre. Visit (www.riga-airport.lv) for a full list of the airport’s facilities, including car hire.

Taxi There’s a constant queue of taxis lined up outside the airport. A ride to the city centre shouldn’t cost more than 6 - 8 lats. Make sure the metre’s running though as a foreign accent can mysteriously double the cost of a normal fare

Bus The No. 22 bus goes to the city centre every 20 minutes and costs a mere 20 santims. The express bus No. 22A goes to the Orthodox Cathedral in the centre but is less frequent.

Car The road out of the airport leads straight to the city centre. The journey takes anything from 20 _ 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Riga is extremely easy to get around thanks to its cheap and efficient public transport system. Trams and trolleybuses all cost 20 santims per journey and will get you to most places in the city. There’s also a vast fl eet of microbuses that goes to just about every corner of Riga. Taxis are abundant, safe and relatively cheap, and should have a yellow licence plate.

Tipping Etiquette
The rules on tipping are somewhat haphazard, as you might expect in a post-Soviet country. The rule of thumb is to leave 10% in restaurants, although check your bill as service charges are becoming increasingly common. If you leave a tip for a barman it’s customary for him to clang a bell. Few people bother to tip taxi drivers.
