Cultural Do's and Don'ts

The Milanese were once among the most cordial and well-mannered of Italians, but times have changed and today you will encounter a measure of the incivility you get all over the world. Your politeness will be appreciated if, whether in company with friends or associates, you pay homage to the culture, be it food, wine, fashion or the arts. Remember too, that in Italy food is almost a religion and this aspect of life is entirely enjoyable. If you are serving wine, never flip the bottle over backhand to serve the person on the other side of you. This is highly offensive. Italians will not normally ask to see a menu if one is not presented. In finer restaurants with an international clientele and a fixed-price menu available this is not a problem, but in more traditional restaurants with daily specials it is best to find out what the dishes of the day cost in advance, just to be on the safe side: ingredients like fresh porcini mushrooms can be outrageously expensive.
