Things to do

The best way to explore Malmö is by bicycle, since the centre is not as big as it first appears. The second best way is by foot. Besides shopping and canal tours, a visit to the art museum Konsthallen (S:t Johannesgatan 7, www.konsthall.malmo.se), one of Europes largest contemporary art centres, is a great way to spend an afternoon. Besides free entry to the exhibitions, the museum has a nice café and bookstore.

One of the largest collections of 20th century Nordic art is on display at Malmö Konstmuseum (Malmöhusvägen, www.malmo.se/museer), located in the city castle to the west of the old town.

The international centre for contemporary art is named Rooseum (Gasverksgatan 22, www.rooseum.se), and is housed in a former power station.

Form Design Center (Lilla Torg, www.form-designcenter.com) exhibits Scandinavian design, architecture and arts and crafts, and has an excellent design shop and a small café.

For an injection of fresh air and peace, a bus trip to the forest surrounding the village Torup, 15kms east of Malmö, is highly recommended. In 2003 Torup was named one of Sweden’s 10 most beautiful parks. This is also a perfect place for exercise, with jogging paths and a charming old-fashioned sauna and weight-lifting centre. Get there by bus, using Skånetrafiken (www.skanetrafiken.seor Tel: 0771 777 777).

Before the Öresund Bridge Link opened for traffic in 2000, Malmö was mostly promoted for its proximity to Copenhagen. Ironically, the Öresund bridge washed away the stigma of being just a Danish suburban area, and gave Malmö back its identity as a happening city. But, nevertheless, Copenhagen is still a good option for a day trip, and is just 35 minutes away.
