Bill Mason

Bill Mason is a business development manager at Portuguese aerospace company OGMA.

Where do you live and why?

In Queijas, which is just outside Lisbon. We chose it because it’s convenient in many ways. It is close to the motorways and still has a country feel to it, which it is losing rapidly, however. But until quite recently, we were living in the country, while in fact we were practically in Lisbon.

What advice would you give a tourist? Any must-dos?

Definitely visit the Belém area. I love it there: it has modern as well as ancient culture. There is the Belém Cultural Centre, the Naval Museum, the Jerónimos Convent and the Torre de Belém, among other places of interest.

What advice would you give a visiting businessperson? Choose a hotel close to where you plan to do business because of bad traffic here. If you’re flying in just for a meeting, take one of the hotels at Parque das Nações, the former Expo site. It is very close to the airport and has become a real public transport hub. The area has become very popular for business.

What and where have been your most memorable meals?

In Chimarrão, a Brazilian grill at the former Expo site. It’s different. They bring the meat on swords and then cut it off at your table and you can eat as much as you want. It’s a place where you can have a lot of fun and relax. And in the evenings there is live Brazilian music.

Where would you take a client to wow them?

I normally don’t do much wowing, but probably to the Blues Café in the Docks area. It’s one of my favourites and the food is good. The volume of the music goes up later in the evening, so if your guests are so inclined, they can stay and enjoy that as well.

What do you miss about Lisbon when away?

The life and excitement. Maybe it’s because I was brought up in the countryside, there wasn’t much excitement to be had there. There are also good golf facilities and wonderful beaches in and around Lisbon.
