Germany’s second-largest city after Berlin presents itself as a gateway to the world, thanks to its gigantic cargo port. Water dominates the lifestyle here; not only is there the historic harbour, but two artificial lakes and a network of canals, too. Filthy rich as many of its residents are, this is an understated city in tone. Style is a virtue, and fl ashiness is considered suspect. In general, there’s a laidback atmosphere and despite its northerly coordinates, the city has a strong Mediterranean-style café culture. Although mostly wealthy, Hamburg does have its share of squalor. St Pauli on the Elbe bank is home to the infamous, colourful red-light district Reeperbahn, as well as the city’s best clubs and bars.
