Edinburgh Airport
Edinburgh’s only airport is about eight miles west of the city centre. It is not served by rail or tram links.
Taxi The most convenient way to get to the centre of town. Official white airport mini-cabs operate from the airport. There is no need to pre-book. Journey time is about 20 minutes and should cost between £12-£15. Bus The airlink 100 service goes to Waverley Bridge in the centre of Edinburgh, and takes about 25 minutes. Buses leave every 10 minutes from 4.40am-midnight. The fare is £3 single, £5 open return.
Car Follow the signs to the A8 and turn east towards the centre of town, which will take about 25 minutes.
Waverley Station
Edinburgh is served by a fast direct rail link to London, other English cities on the east coast and Scottish destinations. Waverley Station, in the centre of the city, is the terminus for the east coast mainline and has a rank for black taxi cabs.
Buses Edinburgh is well served by buses, but it isn’t always easy to work out which one goes where! Two companies; Lothian Buses and First, cover similar routes in the centre of town, although their tickets are not interchangeable. Lothian is the larger of the two, and a single journey in the centre of town costs 80p or £1, depending on distance. A day ticket bought before 9.30am costs £2.50, £2 thereafter, and can be used on all Lothian buses. Tickets are bought on the bus from the driver who does not give change.
Black cabs are plentiful and not too expensive for Edinburgh’s relatively short journeys. Hail them on the street when the yellow light is on, or wait at one of the taxi ranks around the city.
Walking Edinburgh is a compact city and it is safe to walk around. During the Festival in August, it is probably the quickest way around the centre of town.
