Shopping

Old Town By and large, most of the city’s best shops are to be found in the Old Town. For basic souvenirs, try the interior of the splendid medieval Cloth Hall (the Sukiennice) in the centre of the square.

For general shopping, the Main Market Square and the streets that lead off it embody the main hunting ground. Many western clothes chains have now made homes here alongside homegrown stores. Just beyond the Planty Gardens you’ll find the excellent Massolit Books, run by a warm-hearted American couple. Not only is it one of the best English language bookshops in Central Europe, it also doubles as one of the most charming cafés in a city that’s not short on charming cafés (ul, Felicjanek 4)

Kazimierz In keeping with its arty atmosphere, Kazimierz boasts a growing number of galleries, antiques and collectibles shops. Jozefa Street could be likened to London’s Portabello Road in the days before it was super fashionable. A must for fans of antiques and collectible bric-a-brac.

Similarly, the Sunday morning market at Hala Targowa is a treasure trove of antiques and second-hand furniture.
