Short History

With a large student population, a thriving nightlife and a penchant for going crazy for five carnival days of the year, Cologne is a great city to visit for a weekend or just for one night. It’s Germany’s fourth largest city, and has a population of roughly one million. Bombed heavily during the Second World War, the architecture is a mishmash of ’50s and ’60s concrete anonymity, art nouveau ‘altbau’ (old build) and quirky modern styles that offer some exciting new attractions. The Altstadt (old town) is characterised by narrow, winding cobbled streets; the Belgisches Viertel, is an area filled with beautiful, old art-nouveau buildings, trendy bars, restaurants and pretty green squares, and the Kwartir Lateng (Latin Quarter) has a mix of traditional and modern bars and clubs. With a wealth of attractions packed into a small area, you’ll definitely be able to find something to do even if you are only here for one night.
