Short History

Established as a capital in 1955, Cardiff is Europe’s youngest capital city, and since it hosted the 1999 Rugby World Cup at its state-of-the-art ‘Millennium Stadium’, it’s increasingly international.

From the classy Cyncoed area, to the rough streets of Ely, and from the student populated Cathays to the prestigious Bay, Cardiff is undoubtedly a diverse and vibrant city. The former docks (originally ‘Tiger Bay’) was Cardiff’s point of contact with the world, and its industrial heart. Now home to a multicultural and multi-lingual population, and the new Wales Millennium Centre, the Bay is a major part of Cardiff’s appeal to visitors.
