Cultural Do's and Don'ts

Many Hungarians consider it bad luck to clink beer glasses together when making a toast. This fear goes back to a failed rebellion against the Hapsburg empire in 1849 when Austrian generals toasted the demise of their Hungarian counterparts, who were executed for their part in the attempted coup, with a refreshing glass of beer gleefully clinked together. While historians argue that the embargo on clinking glasses was to last only 150 years, many Hungarians still adhere to the ban. To avoid ill feeling, it’s best to simply raise your glass and say egeszsegedre (to your health).
