Insider Info

James Vincent Farrell

James Vincent Farrell runs several bars in Brussels and is married to a Belgian. Nicknamed “Bo”, he originates from the United States but has made his home in Brussels for the last decade.

Where do you live and why?

Ixelles, right in the thick of it. My bars are all fairly nearby, so that’s one reason. But Ixelles is interesting because of its ethnic diversity – and everything you need, such as great shops and restaurants, is five minutes away.

What advice would you give a tourist? Any must dos?

Visiting Grand’Place is the obvious one. No matter how short a stay it would be madness not to see it. Obviously, I’m used to it now, but I can still remember being stunned by it the first time.

What advice would you give a visiting businessperson?

Do your research properly before arriving. Try to make sure you are in a centrally located hotel and, if you are planning to take someone for a good meal to talk business, book in advance.

What and where have been your most memorable meals?

My wife and I often go to a place called Archies, deep in the heart of Ixelles. It’s not the most salubrious establishment in the world, I’ll admit, but it’s lively, friendly and the food is great. We used to go there before we were married, so it’s a special place – always memorable.

Where would you take a client to wow them? Definitely Comme Chez Soi. However, as a mere mortal I’d have to know the client was coming well in advance. Try getting in there at short notice – impossible! If not, I’d probably take them to the restaurant in the Renaissance Hotel. It’s more than acceptable and conveniently close to one of my bars for a post-deal drink!

What do you miss about Brussels when away?

Certainly not the weather! I’d probably have to say the diversity of people. It’s a cool mix of nationalities in Brussels.
