The Slovak language is fantastically difficult and complicated for people with no grounding in a Slavic tongue, but don’t let that discourage you from trying. It will be greatly appreciated and you certainly won’t be any worse than any other visitor to the country. Begin with prosim (please), pronounced 'pro-seem’, and dakujem (thank you), pronounced 'dyak-weyem’. Slovak stresses the first syllable, whereas English usually stresses the second. Pivo, or beer, is the next word you’ll want to acquire ('pee-vo’), followed by key question tags like kde je (where is, 'kadyeah yeah’) and kolko (how much, 'call-co’).
