The cultural mores in Barcelona are similar to those of any other western city. Be respectful of those around you and they’ll usually do the same. People here are, by and large, a tolerant bunch, and you’ll find that Barcelona’s attitude is far more relaxed than that in the UK. Still, there are limits. The city council, fed up with misbehaving tourists, recently announced its intention to start fining tourists who urinate in public or are indecently dressed.

The Catalans aren’t known for being overly polite and they don’t expect you to be either. Be courteous, but don’t go overboard with pleases and thank yous, which are considered rather annoying when employed too often.
