One of the great advantages of visiting Amsterdam for English-speakers is that virtually everyone here speaks English. Many Dutch people will relish the opportunity to practise their English and will hardly give you a chance to speak Dutch. This may be a good thing, as Dutch is a notoriously difficult language to understand, particularly in Amsterdam where the local accent is particularly strong. For this reason, it is probably best for beginners to start with phrases that don’t require you to understand the reply.
