While Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou has made great efforts to rid Taipei of unlicensed prostitution, brothels still exist in great abundance, not only on many major streets, but also in numerous small alleys. Given that many brothels go by the innocuous name of “barbershop” many foreigners have found themselves somewhat embarrassed to find no hair-cutting services are available. The explosion in the number of legitimate spas and saunas has confused matters even more. Finally, male and female visitors alike should note that they might find their sleep interrupted by uninvited phone calls or knocking, particularly at hotels that cater to Japanese businessmen.
