Short History

Captain James Cook is widely credited with the discovery of Australia, although the Aboriginal people who inhabited the land for more than 40,000 years would probably disagree. Cook mapped the Australian coast in 1770. Eight years later, Captain Arthur Phillip led the first fleet carrying 730 convicts and hundreds of sailors and marines into Botany Bay. Phillip wasn't happy with the lie of the land, however, and sailed north into the huge natural harbour Cook had named Port Jackson. The settlers set up camp at Sydney Cove, named after the British Home Secretary of the day, and the site remains the centre of today's bustling economic and cultural capital.
