Sons and Daughters

Plenty of Australia's most famous names are either Sydney born and bred or have set up home here. Nicole Kidman grew up in Sydney and her family still lives here, while supermodel Sarah O'Hare is a local girl, and she and husband Lachlan Murdoch (heir apparent to the Murdoch crown) have a home in the city. Cate Blanchett, Russell Crowe and Barry Humphries (aka Dame Edna Everage) have all bought into the Sydney property market. Designer Colette Dinnigan (originally from New Zealand) also lives here. Some of Australia's most famous politicians are also Sydneysiders— including former prime minister Paul Keating (known for his “touching the Queen” faux pas), and Gough Whitlam, booted out of office in 1975 at the behest of the Queen's representative in Australia, the Governor General.
