The New South Wales (NSW) Visitor Information Line (132 077) is a good place to start your planning. Tourism NSW has information kiosks at Town Hall, Circular Quay and Martin Place (online at www.sydneyaustralia.com). Sydney Visitor Centres are located in The Rocks, at Darling Harbour (behind the IMAX) and at Sydney international airport.
The Rocks Sydney's oldest suburb, where the first European settlement in Australia was located. It got its name from the sandstone outcrops which featured prominently in the area. The Rocks was Sydney's original maritime centre and became its commercial hub. Thankfully many historic warehouses, bond stores and terraces have been preserved. It's a great place to walk and take in the history. There are also many good restaurants, a selection of good and not-so-good gift shops and several of Sydney's best pubs (www.therocks.com).
Harbour Cruise Circular Quay is the place to find a range of cruises around the harbour—from basic through to luxurious. A variation on the basic option is to take the ferry to Manly—you get great views on the journey and Manly is as good a beach destination as you'll get. Sydney Olympic Park Makea trip of it by getting the RiverCat from Circular Quay ($5.80 adult fare one way). Blue Mountains The journey is more than worth it for anyone willing to make the two-hour trip west of the city. Make your own way by train or car or join one of the many tours available. The views are among the best in Australia.
