Where do you live and why?
I have lived in the east (of Singapore) all my life. It’s funny to find that, despite being a small country, Singaporeans are divided between living to the east or west side. I love the east, simply because of its modern village life with a good mix of the beach culture and nostalgic charm of the old world. The east coast beach, the interesting shop-houses in Katong, the nostalgic Changi Village and not forgetting the food that makes the east just very different from the rest of bustling Singapore.
What advice would you give to a tourist? Any must-dos?
The only advice for tourists is to prepare for the weather. Light and comfortable clothing, like cotton materials should be good for the heat, but it can also rain—suddenly and heavily. For business people it’s fine to have a jacket as offices tend to blast with air-conditioning so it can be freezing indoors.
Is there anything a visitor must try? Durian (king of fruit), a real acquired taste. And Geylang, the most famous red-light district in Singapore, is famous for its vices and great food. It’s just interesting to see the other side of Singapore. I would also recommend Fort Canning Park’s Battle Box, which was the heart of British control for the entire Far East during WWII.
What advice would you give a visiting business person?
Singapore is a small and efficient city for business. The only advice I would offer is exercise more and drink plenty of water, as you’ll be eating too much.
What and where have been your most memorable meals?
My first dinner with the parents-in-law must be the most memorable—and so expensive that I’m still paying for it now.
Where would you take a client to wow them?
The Imperial Herbal Restaurant for its unique menu, like scorpion and ants. It’s a real gourmet adventure. For a simple business lunch, I always prefer the Golden Peony at the Conrad Hotel. It’s nice to know the people that serve you. For fun and real local delights there’s Newton Circus. Look for the lady with the loud mouth and bad hair-do, her stall is near the public toilet.
What do you miss about Singapore when away?
Apart from my wife and daughter, maybe a good bowl of Katong laksa.
