Getting Into Town

Airport Shanghai has two airports: Pudong International Airport (Tel: 6834 1000) to the south and Hongqiao Airport (Tel: 6268 8899) to the north for domestic flights. Pudong doesn’t offer much in terms of international airport experience.

Car Driving is best left to the locals, who can handle Shanghai’s driving conditions. The brave can hire a car from Avis at both Pudong (Tel: 6268 0862) and Hongqiao (Tel: 6834 6668) airports.

Taxi This is still the most convenient way to travel to and from both airports. Expect to pay €8.50-€10 for a trip from Pudong International Airport to the city centre and €2 from Hongqiao Airport. Always use the taxi rank outside the airport rather than taking your chances with the touts.

Train Shanghai is rather proud of its super-fast magnetic levitation train, which covers the 30km trip from the airport to the Longyang Road metro station in a mere seven minutes. A one-way trip costs €2.60 if you have an airline ticket for the same day (€3.20 without it). A lack of signs and adequate facilities make it a poor option in comparison to the taxis.

Bus Many buses run between the airports and the city. The stops are to the far left of the exits. While these services are inexpensive and run like clockwork (fares are €1.30-€2.60 from Pudong to the city) using them can be difficult if you don’t speak Chinese and there are no signs in English. Check www.shairport.com/en/ airline02_a.jsp for details of the bus lines.
