Useful phrases

English is so widely spoken and understood in Mumbai that you really don’t need to know the local languages. English is the medium of education and is the reigning language of newspapers and television. A useful phrase in Hinglish (a combination of Hindi and English) is “Bus karo, please!” Use it when someone is being slightly overbearing or pushy, for instance a shopkeeper who won’t bargain. It means a firm but polite “That’s enough, please!”
