Cultural Do's and Don'ts

Although Mumbai is an extremely liberal and progressive city, Indian society as a whole is very conservative. Outside of nightclubs, it’s best to dress conservatively. Public displays of affection—kissing or holding hands—is considered tacky and cheap. Despite its size, Mumbai is a very safe and friendly city and violent crime in public is largely unknown. Indians are very outgoing people, so don’t be surprised if someone you have just met asks you personal details about your life and your salary, or if someone giving you directions hops into your car to literally direct you! Don’t give money to beggars, it’s an organised racket. Carry sweets or biscuits to ward them off.
