English is widely spoken, but it’s useful to know some Hindi phrases.
Please — kripya
Thank you — dhanyavad or shukriya
Yes — jee haan (with a slight nasal sound)
No — jee naheen (Jee, usually spelt ji, is respectful. Suffix it to the first name, eg Ashokjee, or surname, eg Sharma-jee but not Mr Sharma-jee.)
Greeting with folded hands — namastey-jee
No, no, too expensive —Nahin, nahin, bahut mehenga hai
Is it close by? — Nazdeek hai?
How far? — Kitna door?
How much time will it take? — Kitna time lagenga?
By and large it’s safer to get your answer in English or to use sign language when necessary.
