Getting Into Town

airport The Indira Gandhi International Airport is still pretty scruffy. There are different terminals for domestic and international flights. For domestic travel, ensure that you’re at the correct departure lounge. There are different ones for the national carrier (Indian Airlines) or private airlines—Jet Airways is best, though Sahara is now trying harder. Change some money at the airport so you can pay for a taxi and give bellboys tips in rupees. Taxis Metered taxis can be found at the airport, but so can hustlers. You’ll have fewer hassles with the marginally more expensive pre-paid service. Their counters are outside baggage claim, in kiosks marked ‘Delhi Transport Services’ and ‘Prepaid Taxi’. A taxi from the international terminal to the centre costs around [00a3]3.80, from the domestic terminal about [00a3]3.20, with a 25% surcharge from 11pm-5am. The 23kms journey should take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on traffic. Bus The airport bus services are EATS and the DTC. Buy your tickets from their kiosks in the terminal. They take about 30–60 minutes to get into town, depending on traffic. The drop-off point is at Connaught Place F-block, where you can take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to your hotel. But if you have luggage, it’s a late hour or you’re not at a nearby hotel, it’s better to take a pre-paid taxi from the airport.

Hotel pick-up If you’re prepared to pay the extra (from about [00a3]6.30, though generally complimentary for executive suite guests), you can arrange with most hotels to be picked up at the airport by a uniformed driver waiting with a placard and a comfortable ride.
