Delhi is less laid back than Mumbai, but it’s getting very trendy. The young chill out in malls and global hang-outs such as Barista, TGIF and McDonald’s. But, for all this, they are conservative. Women travellers must be cautious. The North Indian male gaze is notorious—and it could get hairy. Dress sensibly and don’t strike up conversations with strangers, however suave, unless you feel predatory yourself. However, among familiar faces it’s perfectly safe to thaw out. Men shouldn’t cringe if they are slapped heartily on the back by business partners. And if invited to dinner at a restaurant, expect to see overdressed wives and maybe even small children. The Delhiite is extremely hospitable and friendly. Enjoy it—and take along a small gift or at least flowers. Roadside florists are everywhere.
