Ask a Washingtonian to [name] his favourite movie theatre and hands down this is the one. It’s been around since 1966, and has not changed much since then: one large screen and a balcony. Hop on the Metro’s red line and get off at Cleveland Park; the theatre is right there. Good neighbourhood for grabbing a bite before and after the show, too.

When this theatre [open]ed in early 2004, the city celebrated, simply because it had gone so long without a proper downtown movie house. This one shows independent and documentary films in eight theatres, all underground. Concession stand sells veggie dogs, along with requisite popcorn.

You have to catch an IMAX film, either at the National Air and Space Museum or the National Museum of American History. 2D and 3D films are shown on giant screens giving you the sensation that you are in the picture.
