Stay here if you have business on Capitol Hill, for neighbours include the Capitol, congressional offices, the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court. In fact, some members of Congress use the hotel as their home away from home, booking extended stays. Suites vary from one-room studios with kitchenettes to one-bedroom units where the bedroom is separate from the living quarters. Other parts of town are livelier at night, though none lovelier, with the Capitol dome illuminated. FYI: the gym to which you have free access is in a nearby health club. Plenty of small, mostly casual restaurants are within striking distance. Three meeting rooms are suitable for 30.

This well-placed hotel is convenient to the Metro, Dupont Circle and downtown shops and restaurants. Its guest rooms are boringly ordinary in appearance, though clean and roomy, with high speed Internet access in each. In addition to its location, this hotel’s best features are its on-site fitness facilities, which include a pool; and service that makes it a pleasure to stay here. The restaurant serves adequate American fare for breakfast and dinner. Three meeting rooms handle 70 people max.

You’ve got 'Heavenly Beds’ (a specially made pillow-top mattress) in the bedrooms, an indoor heated pool on the roof, and a rather good restaurant on the second floor. Four Points caters to the business crowd, and its proximity to the convention centre and to downtown aids the hotel in this endeavour. The hotel’s three state-of-the-art meeting rooms transform into 13 configurations, accommodating 400 people. Guest rooms, though of standard size, are comfortable and provide high speed internet access. You’re not far from some excellent restaurants, but if you choose to dine in- house at Corduroy (seasonal American fare), you’ll probably pull away from the table full and happy.

Perched on Dupont Circle, this Irish- owned hotel offers good value accommodation and gracious service in a convenient and fun neighbourhood. Large guest rooms come attractively furnished in a snappy art deco style with all mod cons, including high speed internet access. Biddy Mulligan’s is the requisite Irish bar, but Dupont Grille is the American restaurant, whose dishes hint at the New Orleans roots of the chef. Ten meeting rooms cater for groups of up to 260.

This hotel rightfully fits in the 'Cool’ category, too, for its bar attracts an after- work bunch in search of fun and delectable food – the bar is known for its onion rings and for drinks made with fresh fruit. The fun factor adds to the hotel’s overall good value. For about £100, you stay in a super-attractive guest room, with lots of large windows, an ergonomic chair at the granite-topped desk, and botanical prints on the wall. The restaurant, 15 Ria, is an excellent choice for delicious American fare; a fireplace in winter, outdoor terrace when it’s warmer are special features. Nine meeting rooms allow for groups up to 200.
