Washington / Accommodation

Located two blocks from the White House, this bustling hotel offers the familiar Hilton standards and is something of a hub in DC – the club-like lobby is always humming with political talk. The talk continues inside the large fitness centre and day spa, which lie off the lobby. Spacious guest rooms combine chintz and tradition, while the Towers rooms provide VIP luxury with added space, a private lounge and special services. Meeting space is found on the second floor: 14 rooms for up to 1,200 all one level. You can get a steak at Fran O’Brien’s, but Twigs is actually the better restaurant, serving decent American food.

Stay here if you have business on Capitol Hill, for neighbours include the Capitol, congressional offices, the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court. In fact, some members of Congress use the hotel as their home away from home, booking extended stays. Suites vary from one-room studios with kitchenettes to one-bedroom units where the bedroom is separate from the living quarters. Other parts of town are livelier at night, though none lovelier, with the Capitol dome illuminated. FYI: the gym to which you have free access is in a nearby health club. Plenty of small, mostly casual restaurants are within striking distance. Three meeting rooms are suitable for 30.

This well-placed hotel is convenient to the Metro, Dupont Circle and downtown shops and restaurants. Its guest rooms are boringly ordinary in appearance, though clean and roomy, with high speed Internet access in each. In addition to its location, this hotel’s best features are its on-site fitness facilities, which include a pool; and service that makes it a pleasure to stay here. The restaurant serves adequate American fare for breakfast and dinner. Three meeting rooms handle 70 people max.

You’ve got 'Heavenly Beds’ (a specially made pillow-top mattress) in the bedrooms, an indoor heated pool on the roof, and a rather good restaurant on the second floor. Four Points caters to the business crowd, and its proximity to the convention centre and to downtown aids the hotel in this endeavour. The hotel’s three state-of-the-art meeting rooms transform into 13 configurations, accommodating 400 people. Guest rooms, though of standard size, are comfortable and provide high speed internet access. You’re not far from some excellent restaurants, but if you choose to dine in- house at Corduroy (seasonal American fare), you’ll probably pull away from the table full and happy.

Four Seasons lays on luxury and guests have no trouble lapping it up: staff greet you by [name]; your plush accommodations come with avant-garde original artwork and antique furnishings; you have access to complimentary car service weekday mornings. Have you heard about the latest? The '4 Seasons in One Signature Spa’ 80-min treatment uses aromatherapy to evoke the seasons, 20 minutes for each season. Seasons pleases the palette with its regional American cuisine, while the conservatory/lounge is a divine spot for cocktails and afternoon tea. Eleven meeting rooms allow for groups up to 250.
