Filling the niche for a local Ecuadorian restaurant (Vancouver’s first), this restaurant features dishes that go beyond the familiar clichés of empanadas and ceviche. Offerings include seared duck breast with orange demi-glaze and passion fruit; plantain-crushed mahi with tamarind sauce and guava-glazed pork medallions. The dishes will give you an exciting taste of South American cuisine.

Havana offers Nuevo Latino Cuisine and authentic Cuban cocktails in a funky, 'distressed’, casual setting. Havana has a large well-heated all-weather patio that is situated directly across from Grandview Park with a view of the city skyline and the Coastal Mountain Range. An art gallery and 60-seat performance area in the back add to the attractions here, but you must try the food: The Tapas are outstanding – try their Crab and Avocado Zambullida (a fabulous concoction of Snow crab and fresh avocado smothered in melted feta cheese). One hour before closing, they switch to tapas and appetisers.

Their menu was inspired by the cooking of Northern Mexico, Baja and Southern California: Broiling, grilling and baking are the primary techniques, and when anything is fried, only cholesterol-free canola oil is used. Lard, MSG, preservatives, food colouring, additives… ? Forget it! These additives are never used in the preparation of Las Margaritas’ traditional dishes. Everything is made from fresh ingredients, and such condiments as salsa and guacamole are made fresh daily. Simply the best Mexican restaurant in town.

This cosy restaurant offers not just Mexican cooking but Mayan-influenced cuisine from the Yucatán. Among the musts are flautas, corn 'flutes’ crammed with chicken, beef or veggies, and egg-battered nopales. Try the barbecued-pork steak, the Yucatán-style fried prawns or the banana- leaf-wrapped pork. Also fajitas, burritos, tacos, chimichangas. Parking is iffy in the area, so a taxi may be the best choice.
