The opulent décor and lacy tents on the ceiling in this popular spot are cheerfully over the top. Chef Massimo Capra prepares sublime pasta, including ravioli bathed in truffle and cream-infused veal jus. Arugula and frisée make a salad out of a luxe ragout of wild mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. Portions are generous, from a slab of seared sea bass crusted in lemon and parsley to tender braised duck. The extensive wine list quickly climbs to dizzying price heights.

Essentially Italian, with a Spanish chef. Twenty minutes from the noisy downtown scene, Piatto offers a restful oasis ideal for business folk, especially those staying near the airport. Welcoming professional servers bring excellent meat and fish, while delicious blackboard specials abound. Popular pastas include porcini penne with a rich mushroom cream sauce. The carefully chosen, well-priced wine list features some 200 bottles, mostly European and Californian.

With its unpretentious décor and rustic food, diners are transported to Emilia Romagna, homeland of chef/owner Gabriele Paganelli. Crisp pizzas are whisked from the wood-burning oven, seafood is simply grilled and pasta sauced with a robust Bolognese is superb. Do try the house risotto, finished table-side in a wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano and flavoured with black truffle paste. Encompassing all regions of Italy, the wine list offers value for any budget. Closed Sunday.

This terrific and casual place has the market cornered on pizza, pasta and panini. From humble beginnings on Queen West, it has built a mini-empire on affordable Southern Italian basics done exceptionally well. Staples include a warm and wonderful mushroom salad, homemade pasta, and thin-crust pizza. Focaccia stuffed with Italian deli meats is another bestseller. Regional wines served by the glass.
