San Francisco / Nightlife / Bar

Fashion-forward trendies at this South- Pacific-meets-techno retreat have to decide between the circular bar (always packed), the cube-shaped stools or the queen-sized beds covered in bordello red. Make your choice and unwind at this very happening spot.

Popular with the upscale Pacific Heights crowd, G Bar is bathed in purple and invites you to belly up to the stainless-steel bar or slink into the couch across from the modfaux fireplace. Fruity martinis are presented with a smile by the surprisingly attitude-free staff.

Kells is an Irish bar delightfully trying to find its identity. The basement bar is a boy- meets-girl cave with ear-splitting music while the upstairs space offers exposed brick, dark wood and top-shelf single-malt scotches. The Financial District crowd is heavily represented here.

Low wood tables with bases lettered S, E or X work their way around the dimly lit room and are populated by beautiful young things as well as the city’s heavy hitters. The early-evening crowd comes to drink while their late-night counterparts just want to score.

The youngish crowd at R Bar comes to chat and drink the excellent beer on tap, leaving the pretence and posing to bars further up the hill. Weeknights are more subdued while the place can get slammed on weekends. Best of all, the bartenders never lose their cool.
