While a hotel down at touristy Fisherman’s Wharf is generally not a good choice, the Argonaut, latest entry from boutique hoteliers the Kimpton Group, is looking to turn that sentiment on its head. It’s a nautical theme at this cosy waterfront retreat, so look for shades of navy and gold throughout, a model ship on your nightstand and a whitewashed captain’s desk at the foot of your bed. Flat-screen TVs are yet another splashy feature, and suites are especially large. The captains of yore would have stayed onshore if their digs had been this luxe. Meeting rooms for up to 300, wireless internet access in all public areas.

The discreet central location near Union Square, deferential service and luxurious intimacy are all still there. It’s the $15 million room renovation, however, that has catapulted the Campton from staid to stellar. Shots of persimmon and red combine with neutrals to create a vibrant palate, all juxtaposed against plenty of soothing pear wood. Egyptian cotton sheets and goose down pillows dress the feather beds; window seats in the larger rooms are a great touch. Michelin-starred chef Daniel Humm is now manning the stoves in the restaurant, to obvious acclaim. Valet service and evening car service available. Four meeting rooms for up to 105, secretarial services.

The Hotel Drisco is considered a guest suite by homeowners in chic Pacific Heights, and who can blame them? This very personal hotel is classic San Francisco and an ideal choice for those in search of something tucked away – but then those Golden Gate views don’t hurt, either. The Edwardian appointments and muted tones mix well with modern amenities such as CD players and VCRs; joggers are steps away from the Presidio and its many jogging trails. Five- minute cab ride to the city centre or enlist the complimentary town car on weekday mornings. Complimentary buffet breakfast and evening wine reception in the parlour. Meeting room for up to 20.

This cosy, clubby townhouse retreat close by Union Square is a refined choice for all seasons, and it’s not simply because of the fireplace in the lobby. Elegant conversation areas in jewel tones invite you to linger in the common areas while upstairs, the smallish guest rooms done in shades of camel and chocolate are rich if a bit masculine. Cherry wood furnishings hide tech-y treats such as Nintendo and a CD stereo. The hotel’s evening wine reception is a great way to unwind and meet fellow guests, a mix of sophisticated leisure travellers and corporate execs. Meeting rooms for up to 40.

The Serrano brings back the Renaissance to Union Square with splashes of Italian marble, bold striping and brightly- patterned fabrics and while it’s all a bit busy, it’s comfortable nonetheless. The revels extend from the lively afternoon wine reception to your room, a pastiche of colour and comfort anchored by a backgammon or chess table, though perks such as hi-speed internet access and panoramic city views have not been overlooked. Ponzu is sapphire blue and the place for eclectic Cal-Asian cuisine. Meeting rooms for up to 120, downtown car service.
