Philadelphia / Accommodation / Good Value

Built in 1856, the Best Western Independence Park Hotel was once a toy and doll manufacturer and warehouse. It has 36 rooms decorated in a traditional mahogany style. The glass-enclosed garden courtyard is the perfect spot for lingering over the complimentary European breakfast of make-your-own Belgian waffles and morning paper. The Grand Parlour, with its rich leather settees, fireplace, and early American art, offers guests for afternoon tea and evening wine and cheese reception. Meeting facilities and other services available include 1,400 square feet of dividable meeting space and three meeting rooms.

This all-suite big round building on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway near historic Logan Square offers panoramic city views from the little open-air balconies that accompany each room. The two-room suites offer data port and high-speed internet access. Each afternoon, guests can mingle during a manager’s cocktail reception held in the lobby. The hotel offers nine meeting rooms in more than 5,000 square feet of meeting space for up to 100 people. A TGI Friday’s is attached to the hotel, and guests can order a cooked-to- order complimentary breakfast.

Sitting adjacent to the Pennsylvania Convention Centre, the GrandView Suites really are a good choice for its price. A suite with two double beds and a sofa bed in the living room goes for $129 to $149. The hotel offers full breakfast and afternoon hors d’oeuvres for guests, and suites feature in-room microwaves, refrigerators and coffeemakers. A 24-hour convenience store helps guests stock up their suites. More than 3,800 square feet of flexible meeting or banquet space can accommodate up to 200 attendees.

For travellers who need just a place to hang their hats, the above-average Holiday Inn Express Midtown Philadelphia offers just that. Located near Restaurant Row, the 25- floor hotel opened in 1964 and underwent a renovation in 1992 that gave the oversized rooms a light floral decor, oversized contemporary desks and modem-ready telephones. With more than 5,000 square feet of meeting space, the hotel can accommodate small business meetings of 10 to a full-scale reception for up to 300. Guests who want to work out can get a complimentary pass to Ballys Total Fitness Centre.
