New York / Nightlife / Bar

Expect everything at this upstairs and basement hangout. Some nights are all suits and ties and others are packed with a big gay disco party. Upstairs looks like a svelt Pottery Bar advertisement and downstairs a futuristic library, without the books. Drinks are pricy, but twice as thick.

Street is not an ideal location for anything, but atop a building on 55th Street is. The terrace bar is one of few in NYC, and here DJs spin good vibe music. The mix of tourists and locals, gawkers and scenesters makes for a fun night. Not too pricy, but not cheap either.

One of the few NYC places that stays true to the downtown attitude, Lit is frequented by punks, models, business types and hip- hoppers. The basement feels like a high school party and often people get as drunk. Dirty and packed.

A local’s favourite during the week that rarely gets packed, except on Friday and Saturday nights. There is always a seat to be had at the bar, upstairs lounge or in the garden out back. $4 drafts.

Serena brings out the party in the basement of the Chelsea Hotel. A neo-Moroccan vibe belies a decidedly decadent outlook that most of the patrons have. Dirty dancing is common and occasional celebs drop by for a spin on the floor and one on the house.
