New York / Dining / Other

A nouveau, of sorts, Indian restaurant headed up by Madhur Jaffrey, a Bollywood actress and cookbook author. The food isn’t the only thing different about Dawat; the first thing diners notice is the lack of coloured lights and shiny surfaces that exemplify most NYC curry restaurants. Instead, an austere dining room is where dishes like coriander chutney rubbed salmon baked in banana leaves and bhel poori are served.

This excellent Thai restaurant is tucked away off street level and overlooks bustling Second Avenue through a big bay window. The service can be slow, but the food more than makes up for it. Green papaya salad and fresh spring rolls (not fried) serve as light starters for the mostly traditional northern Thai fare of duck curry, spicy noodles with beef and coconut chicken soup. The Thai iced tea is delicious.

This impressive David Rockwell-designed space features a 30-foot blue-tiled cascading waterwall that spans both levels of the restaurant, complete with 200 miniature cliff divers. Like the First Avenue location, an exposition grill is located on the first level while floor-to-ceiling windows look out over Lincoln Center and Columbus Avenue. With a new, more contemporary look, Rosa Mexicano at Lincoln Center continues to expand and redefine stylish Mexican cuisine for legions of New Yorkers.

Designed as if it were an outdoor alleyway, Sala heaps the portions on. Ask for chorizo and you get a whole sausage, ask for cod and you get a fish. The DJ lounge downstairs keeps the scenesters flocking and the menu, including glazed rib-eye, seafood paella and balsamic-dressed sliced duck, keeps their bellies happy. Order a jug of sangria, your head will thank you in the morning.
